After a quick trip to the gym, I looked forward to hunkering down in my apartment with some good dinner and bad TV. Fact: Most people who are afraid to commit aren’t going to come out and say it—at least not at first. Usually you don’t find out until three months in or so, when he breaks things off while avoiding eye contact and mumbling something lame like, “Sorry, I’m just not ready for a serious relationship. From the outside looking in, I probably read as a commitment-phobe : With very few exceptions, I tend to spook as soon as a hookup or casual relationship shows signs of getting serious. Sometimes, I feel badly about this blanket aversion to settling down, but I also have my reasons. For one, my base level of solo satisfaction runs high — I don’t tend to feel lonely on my own; indeed, I require a lot of alone time to function, and people who not only understand but also respect that requirement come around only rarely.
And then, agreeing to a partnership also means forfeiting some of the personal latitude I value: When a relationship feels right, I do this instinctively and without getting prickly about it, but most don’t come that easily. What does come easily, at least for me, is the understanding that the pairing doesn’t fit, and once I know that I tend to sever ties.
I view all this less as a fear of commitment and more as level-headed respect for my own needs and others’ needs, because dating someone who will never return your feelings is the pits. I trust a number of men I’ve dated would disagree, though. But if I am being honest with myself, there is another layer to this. I’ll acknowledge that my perspective on relationships could be different , more open to chance, if I had better ones behind me.

Online dating apps are a great way to find someone to date and to start getting to know each other! Meet up in the comfort of your respective houses, and bring your own coffee while you chat! You can get creative by playing board games while chatting, watching videos or movies together, or even teaching each other a new recipe in your kitchen — all over video chat. Find a hiking trail or park nearby and take a long walk.
Better yet, if you have a bike or can borrow one from someone, take a bike ride together. You could get extra creative by learning how to dance. Start inside in your respective homes and watch the same YouTube videos on how to waltz, for example. Then, when you go outside on a date, wear the closest equivalent you can find to a beekeeping outfit, and try out the steps you learned together!
Grab a picnic table at a local park or bring a tarp or a blanket to an outdoor venue. As long as you decide not to share food with each other to keep germs to a minimum, you can have an enjoyable conversation in the outdoors and away from large groups of people. Try letter writing! If you are getting to know someone through long messages, make sure you meet face to face at least on video chat to build that real time connection with each other.
With those caveats in mind, get out your pen and paper and start scribbling! If you have a creative streak in you, try sending art or poetry back and forth.
