The first evidence for Reading as a town dates from the 8th century. It was an important trading and ecclesiastical centre in the medieval period, as the site of Reading Abbey , one of the largest and richest monasteries of medieval England with strong royal connections, of which the 12th-century abbey gateway and significant ancient ruins remain. By , Reading was the largest town in Berkshire, and tax returns show that Reading was the 10th largest town in England when measured by taxable wealth.

The medieval town was seriously affected by the English Civil War , with a major siege and loss of trade, and played a pivotal role in the Revolution of , with that revolution’s only significant military action fought on the streets of the town. The 18th century saw the beginning of a major iron works in the town and the growth of the brewing trade for which Reading was to become famous. The 19th century saw the coming of the Great Western Railway and the development of the town’s brewing, baking and seed growing businesses.

During that period, the town grew rapidly as a manufacturing centre. Concrete office blocks given Grade 2 listing by English Heritage

By Sarah Knapton , Science Editor. More than a dozen post-war office buildings have been listed by English Heritage to ensure that they will not be accidentally demolished. The buildings, which many critics deem to be ugly eyesores, have been chosen to show how architecture responded to radical changes in the workplace following the end of the Second World War. Heritage Minister, Ed Vaizey, said the list showed that Britain was committed to saving all buildings of architectural significance not just stately homes or megaliths like Stonehenge.

Greatest Hits Radio is a classic hits radio network in the United Kingdom, owned and operated by Bauer. The stations generally air networked programming, alongside local news and travel. The network launched on 5 January as the “Bauer City 2 Network”, [1] and rebranded on 7 January As of 13 July , the network consists of 35 local radio stations in England and Scotland, as well as a national DAB station [2] in areas not served by a local Bauer-owned station.

The stations forming the Greatest Hits Radio network are predominantly sister stations to the corresponding Hits Radio network station. Many were originally set up as a ‘Gold’ counterpart e. In Northern England, the stations were rebranded as Magic in — a station brand first used by Radio Aire upon the launch of their AM station in July The stations gradually began to form a network merging most of their schedule, and by March , the only local content consisted of three regional breakfast shows on weekdays, serving the North West, the North East and Yorkshire.

In Scotland, local programming on AM stations was largely retained until networking outside of weekday breakfast and specialist shows was introduced in June
